Serevent Inhaler (Salmeterol)

Do’s

• Before starting to use Serevent Inhaler and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. It contains important information about the medication and its proper use.
• Always activate and use the Serevent Inhaler in a level, horizontal position. 
• Inhale the medication by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually twice daily, with doses 12 hours apart (in the morning and evening).
• Follow the illustrated directions for the proper use of the inhaler device. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider for clarification.
• The dosage of Serevent Inhaler is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Use the medication regularly to receive the most benefit from it. Use it at the same times each day to help you remember. 
• If you have been using a quick-relief inhaler on a regular daily schedule, consult your healthcare provider for instructions on how to adjust your medication schedule when starting Serevent Inhaler. Follow your healthcare provider's guidance on using both controller drugs (such as Serevent Inhaler) and quick-relief drugs for sudden breathing problems.
• If you are using Serevent Inhaler occasionally to prevent exercise-induced asthma, use it at least 30 minutes before exercise. If you have sudden asthma or shortness of breath, use a quick-relief inhaler and consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Don’ts

• Do not exhale into the device. This can contaminate the medication and affect its effectiveness.
• Do not use Serevent Inhaler with a spacer. 
• Do not use this medication more often than prescribed or use more than 1 inhalation twice daily, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
• Do not stop taking Serevent Inhaler or change your dose without consulting your healthcare provider. Some conditions may worsen if the medication is suddenly stopped, and your dose may need to be gradually decreased.
• Do not use another dose for at least 12 hours if you have used the inhaler before exercise.

Common Side Effects:

• Tremor
• Subjective palpitations
• Headache
• Transient side effects related to beta-2 agonist treatment
• Cardiovascular effects, such as increases in systolic blood pressure and heart rate

Most side effects are minor, and temporary, and tend to reduce with regular therapy.

Serevent Inhaler should not be used alone to treat asthma. It should only be used long-term if your asthma symptoms are not controlled by other asthma medications, such as inhaled corticosteroids.

Using Serevent Inhaler alone, without a steroid inhaler, can increase the risk of asthma-related death. Use Serevent Inhaler in combination with an inhaled steroid medicine for long-term asthma control.

Serevent Inhaler is not a rescue medicine for asthma attacks. It should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. Instead, use a fast-acting inhalation medicine for immediate relief during an asthma attack.

Salmeterol, the active ingredient in Serevent Inhaler, can interact with certain medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently using to avoid any potential interactions.

Use the Serevent Inhaler correctly. Follow the instructions provided with the inhaler device and consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns about the proper technique.
