Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension is a medication used to treat high pressure in the eye caused by glaucoma (specifically open-angle glaucoma) or ocular hypertension.

The primary purpose of Simbrinza is to lower the high pressure in the eye, which helps reduce the risk of vision loss, nerve damage, and blindness associated with these conditions.  It achieves this by decreasing the amount of fluid within the eye.

It contains two active substances: brinzolamide and brimonidine. Brinzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and brimonidine, an alpha 2 adrenergic receptor agonist, work together to lower intraocular pressure. Brinzolamide inhibits the production of aqueous humor, the fluid in the eye, while brimonidine helps to increase the outflow of fluid.

Simbrinza Ophthalmic Suspension is not recommended for use in children younger than 2 years of age due to an increased risk of serious side effects, such as slowed breathing.

Do’s

  • Use Simbrinza exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 3 times daily.
  • Shake the bottle well before each dose.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Simbrinza and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Tilt your head back, look upwards, and pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch.
  • Instill one drop of Simbrinza into the pouch formed by your lower eyelid.
  • Gently close your eyes and apply pressure to the inner corner of your eye for 1-2 minutes. This helps prevent drainage.
  • Repeat these steps for your other eye if directed.
  • Use Simbrinza consistently at the same time(s) each day.
  • Continue using Simbrinza even if you feel well. Glaucoma often has no symptoms.

Don'ts

  • Don't use more Simbrinza than prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Don't allow the dropper tip to touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface.
  • Do not rinse the dropper after use. Replace the cap securely.
  • Don't use Simbrinza with other eye medications within 5 minutes of each other. Apply eye drops before eye ointments.
  • Don't drive or operate machinery until your vision clears after using Simbrinza.
  • Don't stop using Simbrinza without consulting your healthcare provider.
