Copper T IUD 380A (Intrauterine Device)

Do’s

• Insertion and removal of the Copper T 380A should only be done by a healthcare provider during an office visit.
• After insertion, schedule a follow-up visit after your first menstrual period to ensure the IUD is in the correct position.
• It's a good practice to check for the IUD strings once a month to confirm its placement. Your healthcare provider will instruct you on how to do this safely.
• Contact your healthcare provider if:
  • You suspect the IUD has come out or you can't feel the strings.
  • You experience any concerning symptoms (pain, unusual discharge, etc.).
• If the IUD comes out or you're unsure of its placement, use backup birth control (like condoms) until your healthcare provider confirms its position or removes it.
• If you wish to continue using an IUD for birth control after 10 years, the Copper T 380A needs to be replaced with a new one.

Don'ts

• Don't try to insert or remove the IUD yourself. It should only be done by a trained healthcare provider.
• Don't disregard any signs that the IUD might be misplaced or causing problems. Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience any concerns.

Common side effects:

• Heavier and longer periods
• Spotting between periods
• Increased or worsened cramping
• Period pain
• Periods may be about 50% heavier
• Period cramps may worsen

Serious side effects (seek medical attention):

• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): Uncommonly, the Copper T IUD and other IUDs are associated with PID, which is an infection of the uterus, tubes, and nearby organs. PID is most likely to occur in the first 20 days after insertion.

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Copper t iud 380a, contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to copper or any ingredients in the Copper.

Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your healthcare provider before using this medication, especially:

• Recent pregnancy
• Current breastfeeding
• Cancer (especially uterine or cervical)
• Unexplained vaginal bleeding
• Uterus problems (fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease)
• Wilson's disease (copper metabolism disorder)
• Weakened immune system (HIV, leukemia, IV drug abuse)

If you or your partner(s) have multiple sexual partners, the medications may not be the most effective birth control method. Discuss with your healthcare provider.

If you or your partner contracts an STD, consult your healthcare provider immediately to determine if the IUD should be removed.

Surgery and Medical Procedures:

• Inform your healthcare provider about the medications before any surgery or procedures involving heat therapy or MRI scans.
• Adjustments to the procedure or test may be needed.

Do not use the Copper T 380A IUD if pregnant. If you become pregnant or suspect pregnancy, tell your healthcare provider right away.

Unknown if copper from the IUD passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
