Neo-Mercazole (Carbimazole)

Do’s

• Take Neo Mercazole exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Your healthcare provider will inform you of the specific number of Neo Mercazole tablets to take each day. Your dose may change from time to time based on your progress; keep your appointments with your healthcare provider for regular check-ups.
• Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.
• Take your medication at approximately the same time each day. Consistency in timing will have the best effect and help you remember when to take it.
• Continue taking Neo Mercazole for as long as your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.
• If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose as scheduled.

Don’ts

• Do not chew the tablets.
• Do not stop the medication without consulting your healthcare provider, even if your symptoms improve.
• Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Skin rash
• Itching
• Joint pain
• Changes in taste
• Hair thinning

These side effects are usually not serious and tend to resolve over time without medical intervention. However, if they persist or worsen, seek medical advice.

Rare, Serious Side Effects:

• Signs of liver problems, such as pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, or yellowing of the skin and eyes
• Signs of a severe allergic reaction, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing

Neo Mercazole should be used during pregnancy only when propylthiouracil is not suitable. The dosage of Neo Mercazole may need to be adjusted during pregnancy due to the raised basal metabolic rate.

Patients who are unable to comply with the instructions for use or cannot be monitored regularly should not be treated with Neo Mercazole. Regular full blood count checks should be carried out in patients who may be confused or have poor memory.

Neo Mercazole should not be taken by patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Precautions should be taken in patients with intrathoracic goiter, as it may worsen during initial treatment with Neo Mercazole. Tracheal obstruction may occur due to intrathoracic goiter.
