Boniva Injection (Ibandronate sodium)

Boniva Injection is given by a healthcare provider once every 3 months. It is administered by injection into a vein over a period of 15-30 seconds.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it, even if you feel well.

Most people with osteoporosis do not have symptoms, so it's crucial to remember to receive the injection every 3 months. It may be helpful to mark your calendar with a reminder to ensure timely administration of the medication.

Continue taking other medications for your condition as directed by your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects:

Bone, muscle, and joint pains

Flu-like symptoms

Headache

Heartburn

Stomach pain

Diarrhea

Back pain

Pain in the extremities

Redness or swelling around the injection site

Most of the common side effects of Boniva Injection are temporary, lasting a few days to weeks.

Flu-like symptoms generally disappear after 24-48 hours and usually occur only after the first injection.

Long-Term Side Effects:

Severe allergic reactions

Severe kidney problems

Severe jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis)

Unusual thigh bone fractures

Low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia) 

If you experience side effects that seem long term, become bothersome, or severe, talk with your healthcare provider.

Overdosage with intravenous bisphosphonates, including Boniva, may result in hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and hypomagnesemia. Clinically relevant reductions in serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium should be corrected by intravenous administration of specific substances.

Boniva is contraindicated in patients with hypocalcemia and those with known hypersensitivity to Boniva Injection or any of its excipients. Cases of anaphylaxis, including fatal events, have been reported.

Boniva Injection must be administered intravenously only by a healthcare provider. Care must be taken not to administer intra-arterially or paravenously as this could lead to tissue damage. Appropriate medical support and monitoring measures should be readily available when Boniva Injection is administered.

If anaphylactic or other severe hypersensitivity/allergic reactions occur, immediate discontinuation of the injection and initiation of appropriate treatment is necessary.

Boniva Injection may interact with other medications. Discuss all current medications with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

Boniva Injection may cause a decrease in serum calcium values. Treatment of hypocalcemia, hypovitaminosis D, and other disturbances of bone and mineral metabolism should be addressed before starting Boniva Injection therapy.

Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is important in all patients. Patients should receive supplemental calcium and vitamin D if dietary intake is inadequate.
