Effient (generic name: prasugrel) is a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of certain heart conditions including:

  1. Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS): Effient is used in patients with ACS, including those with unstable angina (chest pain) or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). It is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in these patients.
  2. Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): Effient is also indicated for patients undergoing PCI, a procedure to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. It helps prevent blood clots from forming in the stent or the treated blood vessels.

Effient works by inhibiting platelet activation and aggregation, which helps to prevent the formation of blood clots that can lead to heart attacks or strokes.

Before taking Effient, it is important to be aware of certain warnings and precautions:

Bleeding Risk: Effient can increase the risk of bleeding, including serious and potentially life-threatening bleeding. It should be used with caution in patients who are at an increased risk of bleeding, such as those with a history of bleeding disorders, recent surgery, or trauma. Promptly report any signs of bleeding, such as unusual bruising, bleeding gums, or blood in the urine or stool, to a healthcare provider.

Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to Effient. Seek immediate medical attention if any signs of an allergic reaction occur, such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Black Box Warning: Effient carries a black box warning, which is the strongest warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The warning highlights the increased risk of bleeding, particularly in patients who undergo coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Effient should generally be discontinued at least 7 days prior to CABG surgery, unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

Other Precautions: Effient should be used with caution in patients with a history of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or intracranial hemorrhage. It should also be used cautiously in patients with severe liver disease or kidney disease.
