Oxsoralen (Methoxsalen)

Do’s

• Before starting Oxsoralen treatment, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
• Oxsoralen should be taken by mouth with food or milk, as directed by your healthcare provider. Taking it with food helps increase absorption and reduces the chance of experiencing nausea.
• The dosage of Oxsoralen is determined by factors such as weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the appropriate dosage for you.
• The frequency of UVA light treatments may vary depending on individual needs. Initially, treatments may be scheduled 2 to 4 times a week. As your condition improves, the frequency may decrease.
• For 24 hours after taking the medication, wear wrap-around sunglasses that block UVA light to protect your eyes.
• During the UVA light treatment, follow all instructions given by the healthcare provider. They will provide specific guidance on the treatment process.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve or if it worsens while using Oxsoralen.

Don’ts

• Do not sunbathe for 24 hours before taking Oxsoralen and undergoing UVA light treatment. This is to minimize the risk of excessive sun exposure.
• After taking Oxsoralen, take precautions to avoid excessive UVA exposure.
• Avoid sunlight on your skin or lips for at least 8 hours after taking Oxsoralen. If you cannot avoid sunlight, use protective clothing and/or sunscreen that blocks UVA light. Consult your healthcare provider for information on suitable sunscreen options. Do not apply sunscreen to areas of the skin affected by psoriasis/vitiligo until after the UVA light treatment.
• After the UVA light treatment, avoid sunbathing for at least 48 hours. Sunbathing during this time may increase the risk of severe burns. Consult your healthcare provider for more detailed information.

• Skin reactions such as redness, itching, burning, and swelling at the site of application

If you are allergic to methoxsalen or any other ingredients in Oxsoralen, inform your healthcare provider. Allergic reactions can include symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Oxsoralen may interact with other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking to ensure there are no potential interactions.

Oxsoralen increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight and artificial ultraviolet (UV) light. Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure while using Oxsoralen to prevent sunburn and other skin reactions. Wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen, and avoiding tanning beds are recommended precautions.

The safety of Oxsoralen during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Inform your healthcare provider about any existing health conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, or a history of skin cancer. These conditions may affect the use of Oxsoralen and require special precautions.
