Atrovent Nebules (Ipratropium Bromide)

Do’s

• Check the solution for clarity and color before use. Discard it if discolored or cloudy.
• Use a nebulizer as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 3-4 times a day.
• Inhale the medication into your lungs, not your mouth.
• Use a mouthpiece or close your eyes to avoid getting the medication in your eyes.
• Clean your nebulizer and mouthpiece/mask as instructed by the manufacturer.
• Rinse your mouth after treatment to prevent dryness.
• Follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully regarding dosage, frequency, and mixing with other medications.
• Take Atrovent solution regularly at evenly spaced intervals, especially if prescribed for daily use.
• Tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms worsen or don't improve.

Don'ts

• Don't swallow or inject the Atrovent solution.
• Don't use expired solutions or a solution that has been opened for a long time (discard after opening as instructed by your healthcare provider).
• Don't increase your dose or use it more often without consulting your healthcare provider.
• Don't stop using Atrovent without talking to your healthcare provider first.

Common Side Effects

• Bitter taste
• Indigestion
• Back pain
• Flu-like symptoms
• Sinusitis (swelling of the sinuses)
• Bronchitis
• Worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Shortness of breath

Serious Side Effects:

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
• Stop using the medication and contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop a rash, itching, hoarseness
• Trouble breathing
• Trouble swallowing
• Any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth

Inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to ipratropium, tiotropium, atropine, other belladonna-type drugs, or any ingredients in Atrovent Solution.

Disclose any pre-existing medical conditions to your healthcare provider before using Atrovent Solution, especially:

• Glaucoma (angle-closure type) or family history
• Difficulty urinating (e.g., enlarged prostate)

Atrovent Solution may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or vision changes. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or activities requiring alertness or clear vision until effects subside. Limit alcohol and marijuana use while taking this medication.

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you take, including Atrovent Solution, before having surgery.

Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects like problems urinating or constipation.

Atrovent Solution should only be used during pregnancy when clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

It is unknown if ipratropium passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
