Atrovent (Ipratropium) is used to control and prevent symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath caused by ongoing lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes bronchitis and emphysema

Ipratropium works by relaxing the muscles around the airways, allowing them to open up and making breathing easier. For preventing symptoms of lung disease, this medication must be used regularly to be effective

Use of a quick-relief inhaler or nebulizer solution (such as albuterol) for wheezing or sudden shortness of breath is recommended unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider. Ipratropium does not work as fast as quick-relief medication but may sometimes be used together with it if prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Atrovent is specifically used to treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema, Ipratropium as an inhalant can also be used for the treatment of asthma exacerbation

Do’s

  • Check the solution for clarity and color before use. Discard it if discolored or cloudy.
  • Use a nebulizer as directed by your healthcare provider, typically 3-4 times a day.
  • Inhale the medication into your lungs, not your mouth.
  • Use a mouthpiece or close your eyes to avoid getting the medication in your eyes.
  • Clean your nebulizer and mouthpiece/mask as instructed by the manufacturer.
