Nilandron (Nilutamide)

Do’s

• The dosage of Nilandron is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the specific dosage for you.
• Nilandron is taken orally by mouth. It can be taken with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. Usually, it is taken once daily. 
• If you are taking Nilandron after surgery, it is typically started on the day of surgery or the day after. After 30 days of treatment, your healthcare provider may adjust your dose.
• The length of treatment with Nilandron depends on how your body and the cancer respond to the medication and other treatments.  
• Continue using Nilandron as prescribed by your healthcare provider unless instructed otherwise. Stopping the medication without medical advice could allow the cancer to spread more rapidly.
• Use Nilandron regularly and at the same time each day to get the most benefit from it. If you find it helpful, you can set a reminder or use other strategies to help you remember to take your medication as scheduled.
• If your condition lasts or gets worse, such as experiencing difficulties with urination or an increase in bone pain, inform your healthcare provider promptly. They can assess your condition and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.

Don’ts

• Nilandron can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or breathing the dust from the tablets.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea
• Night blindness
• Decreased libido
• Chest pain
• Fever
• Hemeralopia (difficulty seeing when moving into the dark or light)
• Visual disturbance
• Chromatopsia (changes in color vision)
• Loss of body hair

Inform your healthcare provider if you experience any of these side effects, especially if they persist or worsen.

Serious Side Effects:

• Rare cases of severe liver injury have been reported, including hepatitis or marked increases in liver enzymes. These cases generally occurred within the first 3 to 4 months of treatment. Regular monitoring of serum transaminase levels is recommended.

Other serious side effects may occur. Consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms.

Nilandron should not be used in women, as it may harm a fetus. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid touching or accidentally taking this medication.

Before taking Nilandron, inform your healthcare provider if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Additionally, disclose your medical history to your healthcare provider, especially if you have lung disease or liver problems.

Rarely, Nilandron has been associated with severe lung problems, such as interstitial pneumonitis. If you develop symptoms of lung problems, such as cough, trouble breathing, chest pain, or fever, seek medical help immediately.
