Vetoryl (Trilostane) is primarily indicated for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism, also known as Cushing's disease, in dogs and cats. This condition is characterized by the overproduction of cortisol, a hormone produced in the adrenal glands. Vetoryl acts as an enzyme inhibitor, blocking the excessive production of cortisol by reversibly inhibiting the action of the enzyme 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.

In addition to Cushing's disease, Vetoryl is also used for the treatment of Alopecia X in dogs, a skin condition that results in hair loss.

Do’s

  • Vetoryl is typically administered once a day, although your veterinarian may recommend giving it twice a day depending on your pet’s response to the medication.
  • Vetoryl should be given with food to ensure proper absorption and reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset.
  • If a dose of Vetoryl is missed, it should be given when remembered. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped, and the normal dosing schedule should be resumed.

Don’ts

  • Extra or double doses should not be given.
  • Overstimulation of the adrenal glands
  • Allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, and hives
  • Severe depression
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Collapse
  • Unexpected decrease in appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy

Serious side effects have been reported in dogs taking Vetoryl, and these can occur with or without warning. If any of these serious side effects occur, stop giving Vetoryl and seek emergency veterinary medical attention.

Always consult your veterinarian for specific guidance on the administration of Vetoryl and to discuss any potential side effects that may be observed in your pet.

If the ACTH stimulation test is below a certain level and/or if electrolyte imbalances characteristic of hypoadrenocorticism (hyperkalemia and hyponatremia) are found, Vetoryl should be temporarily discontinued until recurrence of clinical signs consistent with hyperadrenocorticism and ACTH stimulation test results return to normal. Vetoryl may then be re-introduced at a lower dose.

The use of Vetoryl Capsules is contraindicated in pets that have demonstrated hypersensitivity to trilostane. It should not be used in animals with primary hepatic disease or renal insufficiency. Additionally, it should not be used in pregnant pets due to potential teratogenic effects and early pregnancy loss.

Owners should be advised to discontinue therapy immediately and contact their veterinarian if signs of potential drug toxicity are observed.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and potassium-sparing diuretics should be used with caution with Vetoryl Capsules due to potential additive effects on electrolytes, blood volume, and renal perfusion.

Handle Vetoryl with care and follow specific instructions regarding its administration, dosage, and potential side effects. Wash hands after administering the medication, and if pregnant or trying to become pregnant, avoid handling this medication.

Always consult your veterinarian for specific guidance on the administration of Vetoryl and to discuss any potential warnings and precautions that may be relevant to your pet's individual needs.
