About Eliquis

Eliquis, also known as apixaban, is indicated for several important cardiovascular and thrombotic conditions. This anticoagulant medication is primarily used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients who have undergone hip or knee replacement surgery, helping to reduce the risk of developing potentially dangerous blood clots that could lead to pulmonary embolism (PE). Beyond prevention, Eliquis is also approved for the active treatment of existing DVT and PE, while simultaneously working to reduce the risk of these conditions recurring after initial therapy has been completed.

Additionally, Eliquis plays a crucial role in stroke prevention for patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), a heart rhythm disorder that significantly increases the risk of stroke and systemic embolism. By reducing blood clot formation, Eliquis helps protect these patients from potentially life-threatening cardiovascular events, making it an essential medication for managing multiple conditions related to abnormal blood clotting.

How to take Eliquis

Please read the instructions before using Eliquis tablets.
  • Take Eliquis exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Take this drug twice every day with or without food.
  • Do not change your dose or stop taking this drug unless your doctor tells you to.
  • If you miss a dose of Eliquis, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take more than one dose of Eliquis at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
  • If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet whole, talk to your doctor about other ways to take Eliquis.
  • Your doctor will decide how long you should take this drug. Do not stop taking it without first talking with your doctor. If you are taking Eliquis for atrial fibrillation, stopping Eliquis may increase your risk of having a stroke.
  • Do not run out of Eliquis. Refill your prescription before you run out.
  • When leaving the hospital following hip or knee replacement, be sure that you will have Eliquis available to avoid missing any doses.
  • If you take too much of this drug, call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital
  • emergency room right away.
  • Call your doctor or healthcare provider right away if you fall or injure yourself, especially if you hit your head. Your doctor or healthcare provider may need to check you.

How should I store Eliquis?

Store this Eliquis at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep this drug and all medicines out of the reach of children.

Warnings

Premature discontinuation of Eliquis increases the risk of thrombotic events. If Eliquis is discontinued for a reason other than pathological bleeding or completion of a course of therapy, consider coverage with another anticoagulant.

Eliquis increases the risk of bleeding and can cause serious, potentially fatal, bleeding. Concomitant use of drugs affecting hemostasis, such as aspirin, other antiplatelet agents, other anticoagulants, heparin, thrombolytic agents, SSRIs, SNRIs, and NSAIDs, can further increase the risk of bleeding.

There is a risk of spinal/epidural hematoma associated with the use of Eliquis, particularly in the context of neuraxial intervention. It is recommended to consider the benefits and risks before neuraxial intervention in patients anticoagulated or to be anticoagulated.

Eliquis should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior to elective surgery or invasive procedures with a moderate or high risk of unacceptable or clinically significant bleeding. For surgeries with a low risk of bleeding, it should be discontinued at least 24 hours prior to the procedure.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings and precautions for Eliquis. For comprehensive information, consult the prescribing information and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
